Statistic data collected over the past few years justify that the potential for a full-blown HIV/AIDS epidemic in Russia can no longer be denied. In addition to the significant increase in infection rates, the principle mode of transition has also changed. The latest data indicate that injecting drug use has become the major route of transmission. Sexual behavior between this vulnerable group and the general population may further fuel the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) - often harbingers of HIV rate of increase - have already reached epidemic proportions. Economic hardship and social uncertainties of some population groups contribute to increased substance abuse as well as to increased practice of commercial sex. Such overlaps between drug use and commercial sex work create an additional bridge to general population.
