The Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center was founded in 1990 as an all-volunteer, community based effort of activists, religious leaders, neighborhood residents, and service providers to provide the diverse communities of the Lower East Side with the tools and resources necessary to meet the challenges posed by the AIDS crisis. Because the Lower East Side is a nexus of drug dealing and drug use, the intertwining issues of HIV prevention and drug use was among the primary concerns of our founders. In the eight years since we began formally providing services, we have grown from a grassroots volunteer collective to become a multi-service agency.
